History of Horizon Organic

1991
Not so very long ago there were very few organic dairy products in the marketplace. Natural products industry veterans embarked on a search for organic milk in order to make organic dairy products available in the marketplace. They happened upon a cooperative of small organic dairy farmers in Wisconsin.

1992
From the discovery of that organic oasis, Horizon Organic yogurt, the company's first product was introduced.

1993
A year after the successful debut of Horizon Organic yogurt, we introduced our first line of certified organic milk in half gallons.

1994
To try to keep up with escalating demand for organic milk at a time when there was limited interest from farmers in making the transition to organic, we purchased our first dairy farm located in southern Idaho while continuing to spread the message about the organic opportunity to more and more organic family farmer partners throughout the country.

1997
We bought our second farm, on the eastern shore of Maryland.

Today
Horizon Organic is the nation's leading brand of certified organic milk, with a full line of USDA certified organic dairy products. Organic is all we do. And doing it right is all we will ever do.

We proudly source organic milk from 425 family farms and cooperatives across the country, and that number is growing every day. We have contributed to converting hundreds or thousands of acres to organic farmland. We continue to help hundreds of farmers throughout the country transition to organic production to help provide more great tasting certified organic dairy foods to our consumers.

Respecting Our Environment
When you choose Horizon Organic products, you contribute to the health and well-being of the planet because organic farming methods respect the earth and nurture animals. For land to remain certified organic, our farmers never use harmful chemicals that can pollute our air, water and food. Instead, they use sustainable farming techniques like crop rotation and composting to improve soil fertility and non-toxic materials like vegetable oil to control pests.

Did you know?

• Two million pounds of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer annually are kept off the land and out of the Snake River in Idaho because of our dairy.
• We have converted over 250,000 acres of farmland to organic.
• In 2005, we kept more than 14.5 million pounds of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer out of the environment.
• In 2006, we kept 17 million pounds of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer out of the environment.

Wind Power
Horizon Organic offsets all of the electricity used to produce our products with clean, renewable wind power. The amount of wind power Horizon Organic purchases eliminates 17,500 tons of polluting greenhouse gas emissions each year. That is the equivalent of taking 3,500 cars off the road.
